Isak Borenstein was a holocaust survivor who was a soldier for Poland. He was a Jewish soldier. When the Germans invaded he ran up to Russia and started working as a carpenter. When the Germans invaded Russia he joined the Russian army and when he was about to go into combat he was captured. He then told them he was not a Jew and they believed it. He was then put into a normal cell instead of a death cell. He was later moved to a labor camp near Dnepropetrovsk. He met a Jew who told him his story. Then that Jew was put on a truck and never seen again. Isak was then moved to a camp called Mauthausen. He was put in a hospital because he had typhoid. This was very good because the other people had to deactivate bombs. In the hospital someone noticed he was a Jew and needed to help him. That person supplied extra food for Isak. The Russian troops were nearing so they hung 6 Russian boys and made Isak and the other prisoners watch the hangings. A supervisor caught him with extra food and he threatened to put him on a death transport with dead people. He then was recovered from typhoid and was put in a Bomb Kommando where he had to disable live bombs. They had one explosion. Isak was 64 yards away and was saved. There was one bomb where he couldn't disarm it and had to take a chisel and knock out the fuse. They then had to carry 200 pound sacks of sand from a barge to a river. Then the American army came into Germany. Isak escaped and fed himself water and sugar for 3 days and then a Russian soldier told him to join the Russian army. Isak wondered if this was a trick to get him killed but it was not. He was in the Russian army for 14 months. He then went back to his own town where out of the 34,000 Jews before he could not even find 10. He went looking for his brother and found him broken down. They then opened a woodworking shop. Isak now has a wife and a happy life in New Orleans.
Joseph Sher
Joseph Sher was a Holocaust survivor from the city of Krzrpice, Poland. He moved to Czestochowa and then the German army invaded. All the Jews in Czestochowa between the ages of 15 and 80 were told to go to the market and lie down. Joseph didn't go. He hid in his attic. His dad and his brother did go though. They had to lie face down and if they put their head up they would shoot them. They made the Jews a Ghetto and forced them to wear a yellow armband with a Star of David on it so they could be easily spotted. Then Joseph was required to go and help the Nazis build a highway along with thousands of other people. he had to sleep in a barn with only potato sacks to keep him warm. The Nazis would have fun trying to shoot the workers while they were going to the restroom. He then saw two of the German-Jews arrive. They were still working with the Nazis but only to stay alive. They had vowed to Joseph's mom to get him home soon. So they said he had been injured and sent him back home. He then got sick with typhus, when the Jews had it the Germans would shoot them. He hid behind a fake wall for four weeks receiving a shot every day. After that someone in the Ghetto had a praying room where Joseph was praying when Germans surrounded the building and told everybody to come out. His grandma did not so they shot her in the arm and let her bleed to death. His brother Leo was watching the Gestapo's dog so he got to save 10 people from the Nazis by taking them to a porcelain factory. After he got back from the porcelain factory his brother took him he went to a concentration camp that made ammunition for the German army. His job was to work as a tailor for the Nazi army. At about 10 in the morning in January of 1945 a Russian soldier came into his camp and told everyone they were all free. He found his wife and moved to America and lived a happy life.

What I learned from watching "Safe Haven; The Warsaw Zoo"
I learned the devastating effect of the holocaust while watching safe haven. I didn't even know what it was until this year!! I also learned that Hitler was a very bad man and killed over 6,000,000 people.
Why paperclips are part of the Holocaust.
Paperclips are part of the Holocaust because Norwegians wore them around their wrist to show they opposed the Nazis.
What I think about the Holocaust
I think that the Holocaust was a very dark and deep time for people. I think that Hitler should not have killed all those people because he got rejected from art school and hated Jewish people, Homosexuals, Twins, people with disabilities and anyone else who didn't fit into his "perfect" society. I also think that the Nazis were very mean and cruel for what they did to families. I was reading some of the survivor stories and in one they shot a 92 year old lady and let her bleed to death.
